Cedric Arnold [Sacred Ink] Series

Cedric Arnold is a photographer of immense and emotional focus.

The French/British photographer, who studied photography and film making in Paris, can be remembered first for his 1999 solo exhibition “Ireland/North Ireland” that stemmed from the making of a documentary about Ireland and its language.

Arnold began his career freelancing from London, until he joined the Sygma agency. Through this agency, and trips to both Cambodia and Thailand, he realized Southeast Asia is where he wanted to be based. In 2001, he made Bangkok his home.

Cedric Arnold has worked for such publications and companies as Cartier, The National Geographic Channel, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and the Financial Times.

Sacred Ink is a personal project in development for four years, and highlights the spiritual connection to tattoos that stems from the Yantra (Yantra is the Sanskrit word meaning instrument or machine, which can also mean symbols, such as tattoos) tradition of tattooing.

Mario Epanya’s Vogue Africa

Why is there no Vogue Africa?

Serious questions could abound from Conde Nast seemingly overlooking Africa as a fashion market. With beauties such as Iman and Liya Kebede originating from the continent that is generally considered humanity’s birthplace, it’s a considerable thought to leave it unattended in the fashion arena.

Thankfully, Mario Epanya, a Cameroon native who moved to Paris in 2000, has begun concept art photography for his version of Vogue Africa. A consistent presence in the world of beauty photography, having picked up the camera for the first time in 2008, Epanya has proved himself a very capable and talented man.

While Conde Nast still retains rights to the concept of Vogue Africa, time will tell the simple reason they have chosen to forgo this exciting opportunity.

The Light of New York

cxtmy_lights_of_new_york_01

Assouline, a French luxury publisher, takes a lavish approach to photographing New York City, which is quite dangerous – New Yorkers don’t like it when people just shoot off photos and then put them in a book.

Which, thankfully, is not the case with The Light Of New York City. Jean-Michel Berts, the photographer, takes a bit of a Breakfast at Tiffany’s approach with this volume of work, opting to shoot in low light at dawn in NYC. The streets are deserted, buildings are waking up, and Berts takes this opportunity to shine a dream-like quality onto the city, much like Audrey Hepburn did with her film.

Roberto Roseano

Instead of allowing the natural surroundings to tell the story, Roseano has taken control and painted his stories directly onto his subjects, making for a more interesting artform.

From the above photographs, it is clear that Roseano is a master of using light and minimal color to his advantage, and the last photo shown is a symbol of his intensity and ability to get just what he wants from a photo.
